Patrick Mardis, ¿ì»îÊÓƵ’s director of public safety, has been appointed by the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police as its sergeant at arms and a member of its Executive Board.
In his AACOP capacity, Mardis will be responsible for the orderly operation of all AACOP conferences, assisting the board with developing standards or training for law enforcement executives and chiefs, and elevating the standards of the law enforcement profession while working closely statewide with police chiefs, Alabama’s attorney general and state legislators.
AACOP seeks to improve the quality and professionalism of law enforcement throughout Alabama, and is affiliated with the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The organization provides its more than 500 law enforcement executive members with cutting-edge training and continuing education, conferences, networking opportunities, legislative and state committee support, and membership communication services.
Mardis became Tuskegee’s director of public safety in 2010 after retiring as the chief of police for Fairfield, Alabama — a position in which he served for five years. His current duties include overseeing the university’s 23-person police force as well as serving as a member of the President’s Administrative Staff Council. His public safety career also includes past responsibilities as a campus police officer and investigator with the University of Alabama at Birmingham police force, a corrections deputy sheriff for Jefferson County, and working as an AACOP district representative for all chiefs in Alabama’s 4th Congressional District.
Mardis earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and criminal justice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He later completed studies in advanced law enforcement and management at the FBI National Academy. He is certified as a Law Enforcement Executive by AACOP and the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission.
