Citing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus — especially as it relates to mass transit travel — Ƶ has announced the cancelation of its Founders’ Day Weekend alumni events scheduled for April 3-5.
Phillip Howard, vice president for advancement, indicated the decision to cancel is in deference to the increased risks alumni might encounter traveling to campus through major cities and via mass transportation.
“As the university continues to plan for and respond to the coronavirus’ effects on the remainder of the spring semester, we have determined that it is in our alumni’s best interest to avoid the health risks they may encounter to participate in Founders’ Day,” Howard said.
Howard noted that reunion activities would have involved alumni from the classes of 1945 and 1950 who are in their late 80s and 90s — thereby making them more susceptible to contracting the virus. As a result of the cancelation, the university will refund registration fees in the form of their original payments. For questions regarding refunds, contact Kymberly Holland in the Office of Alumni Affairs at (334) 727-8342 or kholland@tuskegee.edu.
Class agents will continue to reach out to their former classmates as part of the Founders’ Day Weekend alumni-giving programs. Alumni can visit for ways to make a charitable gift online or through the mail to credit toward their class year.
Currently, the Office of Advancement plans to recognize this year’s Founders’ Day Weekend classes in concert with 2021 Founders’ Day Weekend festivities — a date for which has not been set.
